Unsponges, what are they?

If you’re anything like my husband, you’re probably wondering what an unsponge is. the answer is pretty simple. An unsponge is an eco friendly alternative to a traditional sponge. Unsponges are typically used in the kitchen for dishes. The scrubby yarn on one side of the unsponge is perfect for washing dishes. However, unsponges can be used for cleaning tasks, as a personal hygiene item (an all cotton unsponge could replace a loofah) or any way you’d use a conventional sponge.
Now that you know how they’re used, what are they made of? I make two types of unsponges. All cotton, and cotton with a scrubby yarn on one side. These are hand crocheted and have essentially three layers. The outside layer on one side is cotton, the inner layer is cotton and the final outside layer is a cotton scrubby blend (the all cotton is 3 layers of cotton).
One advantage to using unsponges is their lifespan. These can last months if cared for properly. When they’re dirty, throw them in the wash and dry throughly and they’re ready to go again. The extended lifespan helps eliminate the waste your household creates, thus lowering your footprint.
There you have it! Unsponge may be a name my husband thought I made up, but it’s an actual product that’s helping change the way our household transitions to a more eco friendly home.
